Agent Branding

< 1 minute read

It is a general consensus that real estate agents have the worst logos out of any major industry group that has a mature online presence. Looking at a list of agents on any portal and you will soon see that agent logos are in general an eyesore.

Franchise groups top out as the worst in my opinion. There seems to be a lack of innovation in bothy font use and colours for logos. Oh and if I see another roof in a logo I am going to on a rampage!

To me a logo should be clean and clear with a crisp use of colours. A good starting point should be Kuler for your colour scheme and there are many professional logo designers out there. A logo does not have to describe anything, it just has to be a clear indication of your company, it does not even have to be relevant.

Great logos are logos that a person sees once and takes in information, so that when they see it again they know who it represents, that’s all, nothing more!

So tell me who do you think has the best and worst logos in real estate?

I think Ricky Grierson had a good logo that fit well with the Remax style: http://www.rickygrierson.com.
They also used her marketing at the Remax Academy.

“Yeah those concepts are alright but what would be really clever is if you made our company name into the shape of a house, you know, with a chimney and a little garden path and stuff? And my wife likes green so can it be green now? …oh and make the logo bigger!!”

I miss those days, we stopped taking design jobs and our meetings hardly ever deteriorate into street brawls any more ;). In my experience, what honestly works best for agents is this:

Carefully select a designer based on their experience and portfolio.

Brief them face-to-face, very clearly, on WHAT and TO WHOM the brand is communicating – not what the brand should look like – thats what you’re paying the designer to figure out.

Understand that you may initially dislike the first concept. Chances are you’ll want to scribble a hundred adjustments onto the layout and go through 8-9 redesigns before you finally concede that you are in fact a real estate agent, not Leonado Davinci, and actually the first logo was perfect as it was… Don’t be ‘that client’. Unless you can identify WHY the concept doesn’t fit the brief trust your designer: they draw logos, you sell houses.

Don’t suggest the logo should be bigger… it shouldn’t… no really, you’ll end up looking like that guy who always wants his logo bigger… and he’s a putz. 😉

Sign off on the concept and go to lunch – best thing you can possibly do for your brand.

PS: ‘Place’ has the best logo in my opinion.

I recently did a website for Ray White – and their corporate style manual is really nice as well – nice brand.
